Hiking South East Queensland
Mt Barney National Park
There are plenty of remote campsites located throughout mt Barney National Park, they are all walk in without amenities.
Other options for car based camping would be Mt barney Lodge, Flanagans reserve or Big Riggen.
Lower Portals of Mt Barney
The Lower Portals is a 7.4km return walk from the Lower Portals carpark, the track is easy to follow with plenty of hills along the way which can make it a strenuous walk in the Summertime so be sure to take plenty of water.
Upper Portals of Mt Barney
The upper portals is an 8km return walk from the Cleared ridge carpark, which is 4wd access only from the Mt May campground. It's not a serious offroad track I've never needed to engaged the 4wd in dry conditions.
Mt Barney - South East Ridge Ascent Peasants Ridge Descent
There are many routes to the summit of Mt Barney and even the easiest ones require a high level of fitness and strong navigational skills, for a first trip I'd recommend doing one of the more popular routes as they have more visible signs of traffic. I found the S.E ridge and Peasants ridge trails had more obvious trails to follow, however from the East Peak to the Rum Jungle can be very difficult when the clouds roll trough as visibility of obvious landmarks can be completely removed.
The total walking distance is about 16km and typically takes from 8 - 10 hours.
Mt Maroon
Mt Maroon has several routes to the summit with the most popular and shortest route being via Cotswold rd, this route is approximately 9-10kms return which typically takes 5+ hours, it's an easier climb than Mt Barney and it has spectacular views.
For more experienced hikers going up via Paddy's plain and then following the South West gorge is a longer more interesting route which takes up most of the day.
